Last exam, mixed feelings
Finished my exam in Object Oriented Programming (Java) today. It turned out that this years exam was ridiculously long. Of all the previous exams I've gone through, this was insane!
The theme throughout the whole exam was chess - and you ended up with a working friggin' chess game! What the hell? You expect us to write a complete working chess game in 4 hours? Sure, if I'd had a computer to write on this would be feasible, but you see - we have to write everything by hand on paper. Oh and did I mention we program in Java? Where veryLongMethodNamesWithIntricateDescriptions() are common? And the chess game part was only approx 67% of the tasks. The whole exam turned out to be a race against the clock where the winners were the ones with the fastest handwriting. I ended up writing 20 pages, and still I discovered some errors in one of my algorithms in the last minutes. Frustrating!
I doubt I'll get a top grade on this one either - hopefully a B. I'm not taking this exam again though, whatever the result. It's not worth it.
Oh well, that's it for this semester's exams! Finally summer! Wheeeee!
Oh yes, 4 down 1, to go!
This Monday I finally got my orthopedic cast off! I can't describe how good it feels! My wrist is still a bit stiff from not moving at all for 2 months, and the skin uncovered is extremely sensitive. A very wierd sensation - feels like the arm has been asleep for a long time and just woke up. Cold feels colder than usual, warm feels burning hot. And yes, there is a visible tan line!
In other news, today I finished my 4th exam in Database Management Systems. I was at first a bit worried about my answers, but after comparing them with Martin's I felt better about it
All my compulsory exams are thus over! What a relief! Now all that's next is the exam in Object Oriented Programming, which I'm retaking. I'm not that thrille with my previous result...
Ah the summer! Beautiful weather, clear sky and on Monday I'm starting in my summer job at Aptomar. I'm planning on getting some diving done in my spare time as well.
Three down, 2 to go
Had my third exam today - Computer Networking - went pretty well I think, although I know I made some mistakes.
Sleepy, tired, all that. Next up: Databases
Two down, 3 to go
Another exam down - Human Computer Interaction. Went well, again 17 pages. Wierd.
Next up is Friday: Communications, Services and Networks
Started writing a small proof-of-concept for my media organizer idea. In python ofcourse.
One down, 4 to go
Today I had this semester's first exam: System Development. Went fairly well, I think. Wrote 17 pages - hand hurts.
Next up is Human Computer Interaction on Wednesday 28th.
Learning python, great fun.
Game Over
Finally done with the game project this monday - has been one very tiresome week. Too bad it didn't get the chance to enter the Joskar ("Joscar") competiton - they didn't manage to run it and didn't let us know in time.
Anyhow, if you want to try it - http://folk.ntnu.no/johannj/papirgutt/papirgutt.jnlp. The sound might not work correctly on certain systems. It's in half-norwegian half-english but should be pretty straight forwards to understand
The concept is to deliver newspapers to all the houses on the map at the fastest possible time. Quite dull, I know (which is why I made map #3.) The physics simulation is quite good and makes it quite difficult to control the tricycle without tipping over (we had to use a tricycle because we didn't manage to balance a bicycle
)
You ought to check out the games that made it to the top of Joskar though - they're quite impressive
Just another day at the lab
It's finally here! Your every-day absolute value converter! It will convert any 3-bit (hex two's complement) number into its absolute value! Ever wondered what the absolute value of -7 (0x9) is? Thanks to this fantastic device now you can find out! Adjust the jumpers accordingly and instantly it will provide the answer: 7!
Starting again…
Now it's back to my studies after some long and relaxing Christmas holidays. I'm attending my first talk of the year tomorrow. It will be nice to get started again, although I must say that I enjoyed spending some time with my family!
The classes I'll attend this semester: Mathematics 3, Physics, Cirquit Technology and Object Oriented Programming.
I'm looking forwards to these classes actually, as I felt the compulsory Philosophy class last semester kind of ruined my "enjoyment" of the other terms... Now that's behind me and I can start out fresh!
