Tumblr?
Recently my friend Christoffer Olsen recommended Tumblr - a new and simpler approach to blogging. I have long struggled with the complexity of WordPress and found that blogging has been quite an effort. Tumblr seems to address this by suggesting small rapid posts and which can be done from a range of devices - PC, phone, email, ...
Needless to say, I've decided to give Tumblr a try the next few weeks, and if I like what I see I'll permanently move this blog over there
My Tumblr address is pseudoberries.tumblr.com and future posts will happen there!
Bye Gran Canaria
After an exhausting set of flights (Las Palmas - Madrid - Frankfurt - Oslo) we landed safely at Oslo airport yesterday.
I've had a great couple of weeks on Gran Canaria. First 8 days at Gran Canaria Desktop Summit then a week vacation in the town of Mógan.
GCDS was great - there were a lot of interesting talks and I met many new friends from the Open Source world. I really liked that GUADEC and Akademy both were at the same location - there was an general attitude towards cooperation between GNOME and KDE people. One of the most interesting projects I encountered was Zeitgeist - a system for logging events. Zeitgeist originally started as a GNOME project, but during the conference the team decided to split the project into a platform independent engine and a GNOME specific user interface
The second week we spent in a beautiful house in the town of Mógan which Lasse had access to. My girlfriend Mari arrived for the week
We spent numerous days at the beach and some days exploring the island. I'll post photos on Flickr soon!
I suck at blogging
I really do, but here's an update on what's happening in my life:
I'm going to India for a year as a foreign student! More specifically Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in Chennai. I'm very excited, but I'm really going to miss my girlfriend... If everything goes as planned, she will join me the second semester in Chennai - that would be awesome
I'm now finished with the third year of my master's degree! I've chosen to specialize in Artificial Intelligence. Let's make computers think! Interesting question: If you're running a program with consciousness, is it unethical to shut it down?
Finally, I'm currently at Gran Canaria attending Gran Canaria Desktop Summit! I have listened to many interesting talks and met a lot of cool people from both GNOME and KDE
I'm especially excited about GNOME Zeitgeist and GNOME Shell. It would be cool to see what machine learning techniques we could apply to the data gathered from Zeitgeist. Next stop the intelligent desktop!
That's all for now.
This cheered me up
2 in 1
I managed to step on my expensive Oakley sunglasses which I'd bought in the US. This happened while we were out sunbathing on an island in Sweden, near our new cabin at Raftön. When I noticed that I was stepping on them, I twitched and managed to drop my cellphone into a pool of sea water. All happened during one second.
The result: completely broken sun glasses and cell phone. Crap.
Bought new sun glasses of the exact same model the day after and have now ordered an iPhone (expensive). My wallet hates me.
Photos from Iceland!
I've finished going through all my 900+ photos from Iceland and uploaded the best to Flickr!
Go have a look!

I'll probably add some more comments to them later, but now I'm off to our new cabin in Sweden. Back in 2 weeks or so
Back from Iceland!
Back from a week long vacation to Iceland with my family (tue-tue). What a great trip! Pictures coming up soon at Flickr. I just have to go through all of the 946 photos and select the good ones!
Still vacation for me
Will be nice to catch up with old friends again.
Moving servers
I've just switched servers from hostmonster to our new VPS server at Web Hosting UK! Man it's great to have full control of my own server again
So much freedom! I had to figure out what to do with DNS & mail though, as I'd rather not go through the hassle of handling those myself. Ended up with Custom DNS at DynDNS and Google Apps for mail, calendar etc. Pretty sweet with GMail under my own domain!
Speaking of mail, as we're phasing out deworks pretty soon (been inactive for some years now) I decided to switch my email-address to this domain - joh at pseudoberries dot com. I'll still receive mail on the old one for a while, but the new one is definitely to prefer.
What's with the domain name?
I'm glad you asked. You see, I had an epiphany where great Web 2.0 domain names suddenly rushed through my head. Among the top were pseudoberries, in all it's dew covered freshness. I knew I just had to have it. I have some juicy ideas about what to put up at the main site, but I won't reveal them just yet. Stay moist!
Oh crap
During the Easter holidays I managed to fall while snowboarding and damage my left wrist. It hurt quite badly for a couple of days, then gradually got better. I assumed it was just a swelling.
Now, a few weeks later, I still felt pain in the wrist when in certain positions. I got a bit worried, and contacted my doctor for an appointment. After a short examination he sent me to take an x-ray - it's probably nothing, but just to be on the safe side, he assured me. Unfortunately he was wrong :-/
The x-ray operator immediately discovered a fracture. Oh crap, not again. Last year I fell down some stairs (while drunk) and broke off a peice in my ankle. Talk about bad luck. The orthopedist insisted that I needed an orthopedic cast. He also suggested I chose the blue one, so naturally I did. One doesn't argue with the doctor. And now I have to wear it for 8 friggin' weaks! Sigh...
Apparently writing on a keyboard requires movements from other parts of the arm - not just the fingers. Oh, and the cast can't be exposed to water so diving's definitely out. And showering with a plastic bag is suddenly in. That's gonna be one dirty arm, that's for sure...
First day at work!
Yesterday was my first day in my new job! Oh yeah, that's right; I probably haven't told you, my loyal horde of 2 readers, that I recently got a job at a Norwegian cybernetics company here in Trondheim
Aptomar ("Apto Maritime", former SEC Systems) is the name. I'm their new webmaster and network/server admin!
My work consists of:
- Writing a new website, as they've recently changed their name and profile. New logo, design, that kind of stuff.
- Setting up various tools the hard core developers need.
- Administering their 2 servers & software.
- Getting various things done which they don't have time to do themselves. Oh yeah, they're in dire need of a local DNS server. Apparently, typing the IP addresses manually is such a hassle
It's a very exciting place to work, with loads of very skilled people. And best of all - they all use Linux as their developer platform
Only downside is that they're mostly KDE fan boys with nothing but Qt on their minds... Oh well, it could've been worse
We'll be releasing the new website soon, so keep hitting that reload button!
